Saint Habakkuk

Chapel of Saint and Prophet Habakkuk

The chapel of the miraculous Saint and Prophet Habakkuk is located at the western edge of the community. In ancient times, a village called Kalamithasa stood at this site. The village was destroyed by the Turks in 1575, and its inhabitants were expelled and subsequently resettled in the area where Fterikoudi is located today.

The Chapel of Saint Habakkuk was built in 1989. In the same year, specifically on 15 July 1989, the Saint’s hermitage and tomb, containing his holy relics, were discovered.

The construction of the chapel was made possible through the tireless efforts of Economos Andreas Poumpouris and numerous other donors, who contributed both large and small sums. Significant financial contributions were made by Alexandros and Dorothy Elisaiou (£35,000), Savvas Papanikolas from Platanistasa (£9,000), Andreas Odysseos (£5,000), and Sofia Hadjiyianni Kaya (£5,000).

The church was consecrated on 11 July 1993 by His Grace Barnabas, Chorepiscopus of Salamis, with the godly spouses Pantelis and Maria Theodotou serving as sponsors of the consecration.

The Church of Saint Habakkuk follows the architectural style of the Church of the Holy Cross of Agiasmati. Beneath the present-day church lie the ruins of the original church dedicated to the Saint, which was destroyed by the Turks in 1575. Further information about the Saint’s life and miracles can be found via the link entitled “Saint Habakkuk.”

The beautiful village of Fterikoudi served as a refuge for the miraculous Saint Habakkuk. Both his tomb and the church dedicated to him attract numerous pilgrims.

Below, you can browse the book by Dr Charalambos M. Bousias, Grand Hymnographer of the Church of Alexandria, entitled “Supplicatory Canon to Our Venerable and God-Bearing Father Habakkuk, Who Practised Asceticism on Mount Kalamithia.”

It is worth noting that, in addition to the Supplicatory Canon, the book presents the Saint’s life and some of his miracles.
